Re: Snorkeling fins

My personal preference is to use the types of fins that have clip-on straps (and require diving boots). I find them much more comfortable and they don't have edges that can rub against your skin (this can be very painful and even bleed!).

Re: What are the longest fins I can use for snorkelling?

I use actual snorkelling fins (the ones with holes in them), as actual scuba diving fins are really difficult to use when snorkelling as they tend to float slightly and 'strike' the surface of the water when swimming on the surface. I sometimes see people snorkelling with apnea fins, however their t...

La Restinga, El Hierro

27.639012569069344, -17.98407750701915 We have just spent the weekend snorkelling at La Restinga in the south of El Hierro. Over the weekend we did some boat trips as well as some from-the-shore snorkelling inside the harbour. Having emailed several of the dive centres in La Restinga, the only ones...

Plakias, Crete, Greece

35.1810294709529, 24.399931854248052 This is a good little spot for snorkelling with easy access from the South end of the beach (where the naturists tend to congregate). Head for the patches of seagrass and the rocky reefs below the cliff. There are plenty of small fish (damsels etc) and it is a r...

Playa de la Cebada, Morro Jable, Fuerteventura

28.04916979086867, -14.35280638313293 This place is great for snorkelling with huge rays - there are some rocks to the right as you swim out from the beach that shelter some parrot fish, damsels, breams and shoals of small fish, but the rays are the real attraction. Get into the water in front of t...

Red Sea Snorkeling

Looking for some recommendations for snorkeling in the Red Sea.
We'd like somewhere where we can snorkel right from the beach.

Have read that Marsa Alam is good, but would we be better off staying in Sharm el Sheikh, and going on a boat trip to Ras Muhamed on one of the days?

Mae Haad Wreck, Koh Tao, Thailand

10.082146533555804, 99.82097250843049 This is a very accessible wreck of an old night boat that was grounded during a storm. The exact location of the wreck is probably a few meters away from the location shown on the map, however if you swim out at the southern end of the beach and stay close to t...

Gili Trawangan, Lombok, Indonesia

-8.343190351062026, 116.04270977401734 Famed for its backpacker nightlife, Gili Trawangan also has some decent snorkeling. I found the best snorkeling to be on the east coast: start at the position marked on the map and let the current take you south towards the busy section of the beach. There is ...

Koh Nang Yuan, Koh Tao, Thailand

10.119155073902986, 99.81476587677002 These three spectacularly beautiful tiny interconnected islands lie just off the North-east of Koh Tao and offer pretty good snorkeling. The small cove marked on the map is the best spot for snorkeling (head out from the left side of the beach and keep to the l...
